Advantages to learning French
In Canada, French and English are the two official languages. There are many advantages to learning French, particularly here in Ottawa: a bilingual city, the National Capital, and bordering on the province of Quebec.
Whether it is being able to read signage around the city, work at an after-school or summer job, or simply being able to communicate with the French-speaking members of our own neighbourhoods, being able to understand and communicate in French is essential. It increases the choices that we have within our community, nationally, and globally.
Our favourite advantage to learning French at Jockvale is a quote often heard from students: "C'est amusant!" (It's fun!). We love to see students build their self-confidence, transfer their language-learning skills to improve in English, appreciate other cultures, and start to understand how language and culture are intertwined.
There are many well-documented cognitive and academic advantages to learning a second language.
Some of these advantages are laid out on pages 3 and 4 of an excellent document created by the Ontario Ministry of Education, entitled A Framework for French as a Second Language in Ontario Schools, Kindergarten to Grade 12. A list of these benefits can be found below, along with a link to the document itself.
