Choosing the right program/Choisir le bon programme
Which program is the right program for my child?
This is a question that is a personal choice. Your child's teacher can give you input, but the ultimate decision is yours. Here are some factors to consider when deciding if you should put your child in the Early French Immersion Program:
1. Is your child curious and open to learning a new language?
Yes: Early French Immersion might be a good fit.
No: Middle French Immersion (starting in Grade 4) or the Core French program (40 min/day starting in Grade 1) might be the best fit.
2. Could your child handle a temporary setback in his/her communication skills?
They will handle it well: Early French Immersion might be a good fit.
They will probably struggle with this: Middle French Immersion (starting in Grade 4) or the Core French program (40 min/day starting in Grade 1) might be the best fit.
3. Are you as parents/guardians ready to be supportive (at home by offering extra help) if your child experiences some difficulties in the beginning.
Yes: Early French Immersion might be a good fit.
No: Middle French Immersion (starting in Grade 4) or the Core French program (40 min/day starting in Grade 1) might be the best fit. *While French Immersion is designed for parents/guardians who do not speak French, when a child is struggling at school in the early years, it is beneficial to have extra support at home. If this is a challenge for you in French, it might be a better idea to have your child in the English program in order to focus on the basic skills of language development before adding another language. They will still receive 40 minutes of French/day in the Core French program and can also enter the French Immersion program in Grade 4.
Please note: Changing programs during the course of the school year is a very difficult transition for students. It means that they must make new friends and learn new routines. It also means that they have missed out on much of the information from the start of the year and will now be catching up. Please think about what would be best for your child before the school year begins. If you are hesitant about placing him/her in the French Immersion program, talk to his/her teacher in order to make the best choice for your child.
