Programs available
--- J'aime apprendre le français parce que je veux être capable de parler beaucoup de langues (jockvale french immersion student)
Jockvale is a JK-Gr. 6 school.
In the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, learning French is mandatory for all elementary students. There are three programs of study available to learn French in the OCDSB: Core French, Early French Immersion, and Middle French Immersion. It is the parent/guardian's decision as to which program they would like their child to follow. Your child's teacher can help you understand the features and benefits of each program.
Jockvale Elementary School offers two programs: Core French as part of the English Program, or Early French Immersion.
Another option available to Jockvale students is to study French in the Core French program from Grade 1 to Grade 3 and then begin Middle French Immersion in Grade 4 at Barrhaven Public School, just a few minutes away from our school.
Core French
Core French is a daily period of French instruction by a certified French teacher.
The aim is to develop basic communication skills in French, particularly in oral competency, and to gain an appreciation of French culture in Canada and around the world. The focus is on functional communication skills, centred around listening and speaking in French in the early grades and then gradually incorporating reading and writing in French as the students move on into the upper grades.
From grades 1-6 students receive 200 minutes weekly.
You can find the updated program information below.
