The Jockvale French Team
Jockvale boasts highly qualified French teachers and French Early Childhood Educators. We have many French as a Second Language Specialists, teachers with their Master in Education, and teachers from a multitude of French backgrounds. This allows students to hear a variety of accents and to understand many different French-speaking cultures. It also allows students to see that they may continue their study of French beyond elementary school with great results.
Our teachers include graduates of the Core French and French Immersion programs who have continued their study of French into university and French as a Second Language Specialist courses, teachers from French-speaking countries world-wide, and teachers from French-speaking regions across Canada.
Many of our French teachers also have Additional Qualifications in Special Education. At Jockvale we support the Ministry's vision of French for all learners. This means that we work to accommodate students' needs and to modify our programs so that they are accessible to all learners. We work closely with the Special Education Team to ensure that our programs offer many different ways for students to be successful in French, and to develop and follow Individual Education Plans when needed. You will often see students working on the same "big idea" but in a variety of ways. For example, while all students might be working on comparing their community to a French-speaking community in another part of the country, the learning tasks they use to acquire and demonstrate their knowledge could be very different. One small group of students might be creating a slide show presentation, while another student might be working independently to write a report, while another group might be creating a song.
Commitment to students
Above all, our teachers are committed to the success and well-being of our students. We regularly meet as a French as a Second Language team and within our grade level teams to ensure the best learning environment for the students of Jockvale. We discuss new educational studies, review Ministry of Education documents, plan instruction, plan field trips and special events to support learning French, and compare student work to ensure that we are consistent and accountable in our evaluation and assessment of learning.
